Chemistry for Engineers

Course e-Syllabus

Course: CHEM 1315 Chemistry for Engineers

Course Description: This is a combined lecture and laboratory course covering basic concepts and principles of chemistry, and is designed specifically for engineers. The coverage includes reactions and stoichiometry; the properties of solids, liquids, and gases; thermochemistry; the electronic structure of atoms and molecules; and equilibrium, electrochemistry and kinetics .Course content provides engineers with examples of the application of chemistry of materials to current issues in energy and materials science. The course substitutes for CHEM 1103 and CHEM 1112.

Prerequisite(s): MATH 1513 or high school equivalent. High school chemistry recommended. Enrollment is open to Engineering Physics majors only. Concurrent enrollment in CHEM 1315L required.

Instructor: Dr. Mike Jezercak   Office: H320C  E-mail:   mjezercak@uco.edu
Office Hours: TBA.

Course Objectives: Course content provides engineers with examples of the application of chemistry of materials to current issues in energy and materials science. Upon completion, students will have an understanding of and ability to carry out calculations on basic chemical principles and relate them to engineering applications.

Class Time: 11:00 a.m. – 11:50 a.m. M, W, F

Laboratory Time: 8:00 a.m. - 11:50 p.m., Tues

Lecture Text: Chemistry for Engineering Students, Brown/Holme, 4th Edition - Cengage Books

Lab Text:  Laboratory Manual available on D2L

Other Resources: The student will also need a scientific calculator for in-class problem solving and exams.

Evaluation: Final grades will be based on the results of 5 regular chapter exams, laboratory mid-term and final exams and a course final examination. In the event of a serious illness or emergency, 1 exam grade and 1 lab grade may be discarded. No other grades will be discarded and there will be no make-up labs or exams. Weighting on each of the class elements will be as follows:

Weighting:   Grade Distribution:
    A = 85%
Lecture and Lab Exams  50% B = 70%
Homework 30% C = 55%
Final Exam 20% D = 40%

Note: If students maintain a 70% average in CHEM 1315L, there will be no impact on their CHEM 1315 grade. If students earn between 55% and 70% average on their lab reports, the overall CHEM 1315 grade will be reduced one letter grade. Students with a lab report average below 55% will reduce the overall grade in CHEM 1315 by two letter grades. However, in no situation will an overall course grade be changed to an 'F' as a result of the CHEM 1315L lab average grade. CHEM 1315L lab midterm and lab final grades will be scored as part of the overall CHEM 1315 grade, as indicated in the syllabus.

Course Schedule: The lecture schedule, chapter coverage and homework assignment schedule are all posted at http://www.drjez.com/uco/Engineering_Chem/Engineering_Chem.htm

Topical Coverage: The order and content of this course will follow the lecture text. Topical content list.

Audit: Students desiring to audit this course will be assessed a satisfactory grade by maintaining a letter grade of “C” or better.

Attendance:  Attendance to all classes is required. No make-up exams will be given.
Exam Philosophy: Exams are written with a specific intent. Please read Exam Philosophy and Strategy for this and appropriate strategies for completing the exams.

Submitted Work: All work submitted for a grade must adhere to standards commensurate with work at the University level. See the Homework and Problem Solving Organization for specific information.

Lab Text:  Laboratory Manual available on D2L

Other Resources: The student will also need a scientific calculator for problem solving and exams.

Exams will be disseminated for all in-class students.

Additional: To maintain a given letter grade in the course, students must complete the laboratories with a minimum of 70% (B). Except for a lecture grade of “D”. a laboratory average of less than 70% but equal to or greater than 55% will result in a reduction of a letter grade by one unit. An average in the laboratory of less than 55% will reduce the letter grade in the course by two units.

Additional:

Course Dissemination: This course will use "Teams" from the MIcrosoft Suite to meet at the scheduled class time Monday through Wednesday. On Thursday, exams will be posted in D2L at class time with a 2 hour time limit.

Disability Support: The University of Central Oklahoma complies with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Students with disabilities who need special accommodations must make their requests by contacting Disability Support Services, at (405) 974-2516.  The DSS Office is located in the Nigh University Center, Room 305. Students should also notify the instructor of special accommodation needs as soon as possible. Per Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (“Title IX”), pregnant and parenting students may request adjustments by contacting the Title IX Coordinator, Erin Logan, at (405) 974-5380 or TitleIX@uco.edu. The Title IX Office is located in the Nigh University Center, room 323.

COVID-19 Positive test or Symptoms Protocol

COVID Reporting:

Faculty, staff and students are responsible for reporting a positive case diagnosis by submitting the COVID-19 Self-Reporting form.

Masking Recommendations:  Under the current COVID conditions of “Low Community Risk Level” in the county, metropolitan area, and state, the CDC recommends that unvaccinated individuals continue to wear masks indoors.

--------------------------------

The University of Central Oklahoma has implemented recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (the CDC) pertaining to COVID-19 on university campuses and will require students to cover their nose and mouth with an approved cloth face cover or disposable surgical-type face mask when on UCO properties. This means all students will be required to wear a face cover at all times in classrooms, hallways and public spaces. Reasonable accommodations may be available for students with diagnosed medical conditions, and must be coordinated through the UCO office of Disability Support Services. UCO will provide every student a UCO-branded cloth cover at the beginning of the semester and a limited supply of disposable masks will be available in each classroom building for those occasions when students or visitors forget their personal cloth face cover. Students who refuse to wear a cloth face cover or repeatedly forget their face cover will be subject to disciplinary action under the UCO Student Handbook and to the consequences associated with any loss of instruction. Remember slowing the spread of the virus is a community effort and will take everyone’s cooperation and support.
