Advice from Class Members of June Block

To the incoming group of students taking Introductory Chemistry as a 1-block summer course. Below are comments from the previous group of students given near the end of the block. Heed their advice as they are deep within the course and have an excellent perspective. I hope they are helpful to you.

This is definitely not a class to be taken lightly. Definitely do your homework and keep up or you will get so far behind. If you are taking this class in the summer, the first test is brutal, but it does get better. You will start to feel like you can't make it once you hit the second week, but persevere because believe me, the end results are worth it. Good luck.

Go to class every single day. Never miss a lecture. Always do the homework given to you. If you follow those three guidelines, you will pass the class. Dr Jezercak is an excellent professor. He has the ability to teach anyone chemistry.

Dr. Jez is a great teacher for this course, he is your number one resource so don't be afraid to ask questions. The class is FAST, good note taking combined with suggested homework and reading is the key to getting this information. Set yourself up for success by being familiar with calculator usage and reconciling the lectures with the relevant portions of the text each evening. This class is an excellent opportunity to bolster your schedule and transcript in a short time. All this being said, if chemistry is an intimidating subject and you have been avoiding it. This class is not the route to go for an easy credit option.

Chemistry to most is already a difficult class. Taking it in 4 weeks is no easy task. It is a ton of material and information to learn in a month. Don't take the class if you aren't willing to put it the work! Make sure you read the chapters and the homework assignments. Although they aren't for a grade they are very helpful and good to work through so you make sure you understand the material. Labs are really interesting and fun! Good Luck!

A lot of information in a very short time. It was the summer course it was 16 days for a 16 week course. Do the homework and take notes. The most important thing is if you do not understand ask questions until you do even if you have to reword the question several times. ASK QUESTIONS ALOT.

We typically learned 1 chapter per day, so after each class period, I would go to the library and do all the problems from that chapter. It is not a good idea to wait until the day before the test to study for the exam or else you'll just get overwhelmed with all that information! Getting an A is NOT HARD! Just study, do the practice problems in the book, and don't procrastinate!

I think the biggest thing in this class is just doing to reading and the practice problems. Listening to the lecture, while helpful, is just not enough. Applying what you learned is different from remembering material. This class does take up a lot of time so it'd be in your best interest to not take this course with other hard courses. In all, this class is completely passable. Pay attention in class, do the reading and homework and you should be fine.

Homework is not required but is required to do well in the class. This class is not a breeze by any means so pay very close attention. Do not miss any content do to the short amount of class!

First of all I wanna say this class is not meant for the lazy! This class is fast paced and if you are someone who struggles with that type of thing then it's better to go a full semester. That being said, Dr. Jeez is an amazing high energy professor who loves chemistry. The best advice I can give someone is READ! Ask questions! He is a professor who loves to see how our minds work and wants to find the best way to help you understand a concept better. Study for all exams and always come to class every day because if you miss it'll be like missing a week of class. Good luck and make sure you do the homework for your own benefit!

I have to be brutally honest; this class is NOT easy, but it can be done. In order to actually make it through the entire 4 weeks you need to focus, focus, and focus. Do not miss a day of class under any circumstances, or you will be lost. About half way through you will be having nightmares about chemistry and will probably be stressing and thinking what you got yourself into, but don’t quit, just hang in there and ask Dr. J questions, review notes, and do the homework. At times I was very lost, so I asked Dr. J if I could bring my video camera to record his lectures and he said that was perfectly fine. This helped me so much because I realized the notes I was writing down were not accurate, by recording his lectures I was able to rewrite my notes accordingly. Doing this really helped me understand class better. Oh and if you have a job, or other classes, this can get really difficult because you will need your full attention on this course. Good luck and don't give up, it can be done.

Do all of the homework, take great notes, ask questions, and attend class everyday. This class is not easy!

This class is very enjoyable. If you take notes and do the homework, you will be fine. Flash cards are your friends in this class.

Awesome professor! Very kind and easy going. I had work every morning before class so I was normally like a minute or two late. Although it is very important to go to class everyday because we covered so much in each class! Although out of all the classes I've had I have probably learned AND understood things more than I ever had before!

For this class attendance every day is a must! Missing a class means missing a full chapter, if not more! Also taking notes is a must, the book can be a bit confusing at times. I manage at a restaurant, so this class was a lot to take on. I had very little time to study, but will still pass the class!
