Experimental Physical Chemistry

Course e-Syllabus

Course: Experimental Physical Chemistry - CHEM 3602

Course Description: Laboratory course with emphasis on the collection and analysis of physical-chemical data in areas of thermodynamics, kinetics, physical properties of pure substances and mixtures, quantum mechanics, spectroscopy, and statistics.

Prerequisites: CHEM 3312, 3513 or concurrent enrollment.

Instructor: Dr. Mike Jezercak

Office: H 320 C
E-mail: drjez@uco.drjez.com
Office Hours: Posted Hours and by arrangement.

Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students will have gained exposure and practice in the gathering and analysis of physical data. Techniques used will include calorimetry, vacuum techniques, computer interfacing, gas handling and computer techniques. Analysis will involve Calculus analysis, numerical and computer techniques.

Class Time: 1:00 p.m. – 4:50 p.m. Tuesday

Course Text: Material Provided

Other Resources: Each group will be required to set up an account at LabArchives, an online electronic notebook system. All laboratory work will be carried out on this site. All lab teams will keep an electronic laboratory notebook via Lab Archives ELN system. See Experimental_Physical_Chemistry _Lab_Notebook for more details.

Evaluation: Grades will be distributed based on performance on several laboratory reports covering the laboratories listed below. Grades will be assigned roughly based on the following percentage breakdown:

Weighting:

Grade Distribution:

Quality and Accuracy of Laboratory Work

30%

A – 85%

Notebook

30%

B – 70%

Developmental Lab Final

40%

C – 55%

D – 40%

Laboratory: Equipment is stored in the laboratory. You have the laboratory available for your use as long as there is some supervision. It is your place and will be kept clean. All equipment has a place and needs to be replaced unless an experiment is in progress. Any vials of sample material must be labeled with a name and a data or it will be discarded immediately. No grades will be issued until the laboratory is clean.

Course Schedule: The laboratory schedule, assignments are all posted. See Lab_Assignments for more.

Attendance and Make-up Policy: The laboratory class is scheduled on a single lab day. You may work in the laboratory at other time through specific approval. There is no make-up time.

Late Work: Final laboratory notebooks are due the second Saturday at midnight after the lab is completed. Late labs will be charged 20% reduction every week that the lab is overdue.

Submitted Work: All work submitted for a grade must adhere to standards commensurate with work at the Universitry level. See the Homework Guide for specific information.

Audit: Students desiring to audit this course will be assessed a satisfactory grade by maintaining a letter grade of “C” or better.

Disability Support:
The University of Central Oklahoma complies with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Students with disabilities who need special accommodations must make their requests by contacting Disability Support Services, at (405) 974-2516. The DSS Office is located in the Nigh University Center, Room 305. Students should also notify the instructor of special accommodation needs as soon as possible. Per Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (“Title IX”), pregnant and parenting students may request adjustments by contacting the Title IX Coordinator, at (405) 974-3377 or TitleIX@uco.edu. The Title IX Office is located in the Lillard Administration Building, Room 114D
